Graham's group develops SERS-based nanoplasmonic sensing platforms for biomedical applications. Research directions: (1) SERS nanogap substrates — engineering colloidal gold and silver nanostructure clusters with reproducible, high-enhancement nanogaps for single-molecule SERS detection; (2) In vivo SERS — intravenous SERS nanotags for tumor imaging and multiplexed biomarker detection in living organisms; (3) Microfluidic SERS — integrating SERS probes in microfluidic channels for continuous monitoring of circulating biomarkers; (4) Quantitative SERS — calibration strategies for absolute analyte quantification for clinical diagnostics. Extreme sensitivity (single-molecule) relevant to quantum-enhanced optical sensing.
Jeroen Kalkman develops optical tomography and spectroscopy methods for biomedical imaging. Research: (1) Fourier-domain OCT including spectroscopic OCT for tissue structural and functional imaging; (2) novel light sources and detectors for skin cancer detection (NWO KIC project NextDeLights); (3) scattering media imaging. His work is relevant to advanced biosensing with optical coherence.
Murray develops mid-infrared photonic sources and detectors and combines mid-IR spectroscopy with mass-spectrometry imaging to provide complementary optical and biochemical maps of tissue for biomedical sensing.
Phillips works on quantum imaging (entangled/twin-photon imaging at the quantum limit) and label-free mid-infrared spectroscopic biomedical imaging; he co-founded Digistain, a spin-out applying infrared spectroscopic histopathology to rapid cancer diagnostics.
Yakovlev develops label-free biomedical imaging: Brillouin micro-spectroscopy of cell/tissue viscoelasticity, impulsive stimulated Brillouin scattering, SERS and coherent-Raman diagnostics, and quantum-enhanced (photon-number-resolving, sub-shot-noise) optical imaging in collaboration with Agarwal/Scully. In the broader landscape of NV-centre ensemble quantum sensing (DEER, nano-NMR, T1 relaxometry) operating near pT/sqrt(Hz) sensitivity, this work provides the biomedical, quantum-enhanced-imaging bridge for spin-sensor bio-applications.
